19/7/13. Preparations are in the final stages. Our car left a few weeks ago, and expected to arrive in Cape Town at the end of July. We will leave Sydney for Cape Town on August 4th.
In the end, the shipping process was pretty straight forward; Taleah at NRMA in Sydney was great to deal with, and turned the Carnet (the car’s “passport”) around within 5 days.
Duncan from African Overlanders secured a competitive shipping quote from Sydney to Cape Town. He will also look after the import formalities at the South African end, as well as pick us up from the airport when we arrive. If all things go to plan the car will be ready at his place for us to fill the tanks and load the pantry and fridge.
Mark and Michael from Airmark looked after shipping from this end. The container was ready for us when we arrived, fuel tank had to be drained and rooftent taken off to fit into the standard 20″ container. Bon voyage car.
The only drama to date is the loss of the Carnet in South Africa. For some reason (probably in true African style), the Carnet arrived at a sorting office in Cape Town, only to be returned to sender 😦 via Sea Mail, so it won’t get back to OZ until after we have left. Bit of a dilemma but hopefully something that can be sorted out.
